SIDEWINDERS HONORED WITH TEAM OF THE YEAR TROPHY
Tucson, AZ—The Tucson Sidewinders will add another piece of hardware to the trophy case after a stellar 2006 season by receiving the Minor League Team of the Year Trophy as selected by MiLB.com/MLB Advanced Media. The Sidewinders garnered the award after finishing the regular season with an all-time franchise best record of 91-53, clinching their first PCL Southern Division title on August 27th. Tucson won more games than any other Minor League team during the 2006 season.
“We are proud to congratulate Rick Parr, Chip Hale and the Tucson Sidewinders organization on their successes from this past season,” said Matthew Gould, Assistant Managing Editor for MLB Advanced Media. “There were worthy candidates across all levels of the Minor Leagues in 2006, but we felt that the Sidewinders’ on-field performance, punctuated by their victory in the inaugural Bricktown Showdown, clearly distinguished them from the other successful clubs.”
Tucson went 7-1 in the playoffs, claiming the first Pacific Coast League Championship in Sidewinders history and the Tucson franchise’s third after the Toros won it all in 1991 and 1993. The team went on to win the first Bricktown Showdown 5-2 over the International League’s Toledo Mudhens in the return of the Triple-A Championship.
The Minor League Team of the Year Trophy joins numerous other honors the club received in 2006, including the Triple-A Championship Trophy, Pacific Coast League Championship Trophy, the PCL Southern Division title, the Manager of the Year Award (Chip Hale), the Bricktown Showdown Most Valuable Pitcher (Micah Owings) and the Bricktown Showdown Most Valuable Player (Scott Hairston).
“A Pro Sports Franchise Owner could only dream to have a season like what your Tucson Sidewinders delivered last year,” said Sidewinders Owner Jay Zucker. “It was an honor to be an Ambassador of our Community and bring world-wide attention to Tucson."
Fans will be able to view the Sidewinders Team of the Year and Championship Trophies firsthand during the club’s annual Winter Caravan occurring February 7th and 8th.
“As a General Manager in the business for 31 years, I’ve never seen a team this good,” said Sidewinders GM Rick Parr. “Receiving this award is icing on the cake for the greatest season that I have ever been a part of.”
The 2007 Sidewinders season begins on the road on Thursday, April 5th with the team’s home opener occurring on Fireworks Friday, April 13th at 6:30 p.m. against Colorado Springs. For more information on the Tucson Sidewinders please call 520-434-1021 or visit www.tucsonsidewinders.com.
